Step Two: Finding Faith
When people first encounter AA, many struggle with Step Two and the idea of submitting to a “Higher Power.” Those with no faith may see this as impossible. Die-hard atheists may be offended. And former believers who have lost faith don’t see the point.
But an open mind is all that’s required. View AA itself as that power – a force that has helped millions. Or pick any belief that makes sense, knowing that over time you’ll likely broaden your interpretation. The breadth of paths to find faith in AA is immense.
What matters most is that you stop fighting and work the program with willingness. As your life transforms, beliefs may follow. But don’t demand God prove anything now; instead, align your will with what He wants.
If you’re scientific, value the evidence – AA works where human willpower fails. If you rejected religion, recognize AA spirituality does not demand piety, only honesty to address flaws. If you lived “self-reliantly,” see that humility makes room for truth. If you’re still defiant, admit defeat; reliance, not demands, breeds faith.
Don’t aim for “perfection” in this step yet – progress, not absolutism, is the goal. Stay open to new perspectives. Sobriety alone often leads to faith. But for now, stop debating – keep learning, growing, sharing. With time, your Higher Power can reveal itself. Just try it without dismissing the possibility.
